Alberobello and Cinema

Alberobello has been a source of inspiration for filmmakers for nearly a century. From the silent film Idillio infranto to contemporary productions, the town and its surroundings have appeared in numerous films, television series and documentaries.

   Silent Cinema: Broken Idyll

   One of the earliest cinematic references to Alberobello dates back to 1931. The silent film “Idillio Infranto” (“Broken Idyll”), directed by Nello Mauri, is considered both the first film produced and shot in Puglia and the last silent film in Italian cinema. The story unfolds in a rural and traditional Apulia, where Alberobello and its countryside become an emotional and social backdrop. At this stage, Alberobello was not yet the world-famous tourist destination we know today. It was a land of labour, stone and rural life.
